Ottawa Horticulture Building Wedding

Madeline and Alex | A moody fall wedding at the Ottawa Horticulture Building

The Ottawa Horticulture Building plays host to many weddings throughout the year and is one of the only industrial-style venues in the city. It’s a beautiful space that can host a large guest list, making it perfect for big wedding celebrations.

Madeline and Alex chose to get married at the Horticulture Building, and it was the perfect space for their day! It did, however, unfold into quite the adventure. Unbeknownst to us, the wedding happened on the same day as the infamous tornado that tore through the Ottawa region in 2018. Although the tornado did a lot of damage, Madeline and Alex (and their wedding) were completely safe! We did encounter power outages and flooding from the aftermath of the tornado. But in the end, it was the most incredible day ever!

Getting Ready Moments

I joined Madeline the morning of their wedding to capture some of her getting ready details. We were also joined by Michael from Mocha Tree, who was the amazing videographer at the wedding. The entire morning was relaxed and calm, setting the tone for the rest of the day!

The Indoor Industrial Ceremony

Madeline and Alex decided to get ready in separate spaces and wait until the ceremony to see each other. Not every couple opts to do a first look, and these two decided to wait until the aisle.

Since Alex has a deep love for music and plays in a band, they also incorporated lots of musical details in their decor. For example, their wedding favours were a mix-tape of songs (displaying their engagement photos as the cover). Alex even wore cassette tape cufflinks with his suit! It was one of the most thought-out and personalized weddings of the season!

Blustery Portraits and Horticulture Wedding Decor

Following the ceremony, we quickly snuck the couple outdoors to do some portraits and give them a moment to take everything in. It was quite windy at the time, but it wasn’t until later that evening that we realized we were doing portraits at the same time the tornados were touching down on the outskirts of the city! It was wild. Luckily, we didn’t stay outdoors too long, and retreated back inside to capture cocktail hour and decor details.

As far as details go, Madeline and Alex had one of the most personalized weddings I’ve ever seen! Since they are both fans and students of English literature, they incorporated their love of books into their wedding. The centrepieces were stacks of classic books with bouquets on top. They had deep burgundy tones set as their moody fall wedding colour, with gold accents. It was truly spectacular!
