Some wedding days feel like pure magic from start to finish, and Lissa and Nic’s intimate winter wedding at the Lord Elgin Hotel was one of them. Held in December, their celebration embraced the cozy elegance of a winter wedding, complete with winter warmth, heartfelt moments, and a stunning venue that provided the perfect backdrop. With the newly renovated Trillium Room setting the stage, their day was filled with laughter, love, many happy tears, and unforgettable memories!

One of my favourite parts of wedding photography is capturing the little in-between moments. The ones that truly tell the story of the day. As guests arrived at the newly renovated Trillium Room, there was an undeniable warmth in the air (despite the freezing rain outside)! Friends and family greeted each other with tight hugs, excited whispers, and shared laughs over memories with the couple.
Instead of stiff, posed shots, I focused on documentary-style photography to truly capture the essence of these moments. There’s something powerful about candid photos. They take you right back to how it felt. The nervous excitement before walking down the aisle, the way a mother’s eyes glisten watching her child get married, the deep belly laughs shared between lifelong friends. These are the moments that matter most. Lissa and Nic’s wedding was full of them.
A heartfelt Lord Elgin wedding ceremony
The ceremony itself? Let’s just say there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. A close friend (who also happened to be a judge) officiated the ceremony, adding a deeply personal touch. The ceremony was intimate, heartfelt, and deeply moving. Lissa and Nic wrote their own vows and honestly, wow! What an emotional rollercoaster. One moment, we were all laughing at their inside jokes and sweet anecdotes; the next, everyone was wiping away happy tears.
It’s these kinds of moments that make weddings so special. The raw, unfiltered love between two people, witnessed by those who mean the most to them. Lissa and Nic’s love story unfolded so beautifully in that space, and I feel incredibly lucky to have been there to capture it all.
Indoor portraits at the winter wedding
Now, let’s talk about portraits. If you’ve ever planned a winter wedding, you know that the weather can be unpredictable. Freezing rain, snowstorms, or frigid temperatures can make outdoor portraits challenging.
Originally, Lissa and Nic had hoped for outdoor portraits, but a bout of freezing rain meant we had to pivot. Fortunately, the Trillium Room provided a breathtaking indoor alternative. The room’s large windows, stylish decor, and warm lighting made for a picture-perfect backdrop, proving that well-designed indoor spaces are a must for winter weddings. Lissa and Nic embraced the moment, soaking in the magic of their day while we moved through different areas of the space. The Lord Elgin’s thoughtful design and attention to detail ensured that not a moment of beauty was lost due to the weather.
