Iceland Destination Wedding

Angela and Brandon | A spectacular adventure across Iceland

Flying from Canada to Iceland to photograph Angela and Brandon’s wedding was the start of an adventure I’ll never forget. Over the course of one day, we drove for more than 14 hours. We chased light, waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches, and those dramatic basalt columns that make Iceland feel completely otherworldly. Every stop along the way offered something unique. The entire day was a perfect mix of epic landscapes, intimate moments, and, of course, a few unexpected surprises that reminded us why Iceland is as unpredictable as it is beautiful.

Just a note to warn you: this is a big blog post! I’ve sprinkled in location-specific tips throughout the post, but scroll all the way down to find my epic list of “Iceland Wedding Tips”.

Iceland Destination Wedding

Hiking to Svartifoss Waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park

Our first stop was Svartifoss, tucked into Vatnajökull National Park. The hike in is gentle but full of magic: mossy cliffs, lava formations, and the sound of rushing water guiding the way. Svartifoss is famous for its dark basalt columns framing the waterfall. Photographing Angela and Brandon in this space felt like stepping into a dream.

The light constantly shifted, casting soft glows on the misty falls and the surrounding cliffs. It was the perfect way to start their wedding day, capturing quiet, intimate moments against Iceland’s striking natural backdrop.

Svartifoss tip: Bring waterproof boots and layers! Even a short hike can feel brisk with the spray from the falls. As you can see, Angela had an underlayer sewn into her dress so she could easily invert it to make the hike easier (and less muddy).

Ice and Light at Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and Diamond Beach

Next, we made our way to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon. The icebergs floating in the lagoon are mesmerizing! A palette of soft blues and whites that constantly shifts as the light changes. Just across the road (a short drive away), Diamond Beach offered a dramatic contrast: black sand littered with glistening ice chunks and waves crashing onto the shore.

Angela and Brandon’s portraits here were cinematic. The quiet of the lagoon paired with the raw energy of the beach created a perfect blend of serene and dramatic imagery. It’s one of those spots where you pause and just take it all in… and in my case, photograph every moment like it’s the first time you’ve ever seen it!

Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach tip: Arrive early (or late) to avoid crowds! The lagoon and beach are incredibly popular, and having a bit of quiet light can make a huge difference for photos. Also, keep an eye on the tides at Diamond Beach: the ice chunks shift constantly, so you’ll want to scout a few spots before setting up portraits.

Exploring the Epic Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon was next on our route, and it did not disappoint. Winding rivers carve through steep, mossy cliffs, making the canyon feel like a scene from a fantasy film. We paused often along the walking trails, letting Angela and Brandon take in the view, laugh, and savour a quiet moment away from everything else.

Iceland never stops surprising you. Every turn reveals a new landscape, and every stop offers a new perspective. It’s a reminder of why adventure is such a core part of destination weddings. The journey truly becomes part of the story.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon tip: The canyon’s walking paths can be narrow and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes and watch your step, especially if you’re wearing wedding attire! Early morning or late afternoon light casts beautiful shadows along the cliffs, making photos extra cinematic. And because the canyon is popular, consider scouting a few spots along the rim for quieter moments and unique perspectives.

Black Sands and Basalt Columns at Reynisfjara Beach

No trip to southern Iceland is complete without a visit to Reynisfjara Beach. The black sand, powerful waves, and basalt columns of Hálsanefshellir Cave make it one of the most striking locations in the world. Photographing Angela and Brandon here was magical. Truly. The dramatic backdrop simply emphasized the intimacy of their connection within the wild landscape.

The beach’s raw energy is humbling. Standing next to the basalt cliffs, listening to the waves crash, you’re reminded that Iceland’s beauty comes hand in hand with its power. It makes for incredible photos, but also a profound experience.

Reynisfjara Beach tip: Reynisfjara’s waves are powerful and unpredictable. They’re called “sneaker waves” for a reason! Keep a safe distance from the water when posing or taking photos. The basalt columns at Hálsanefshellir Cave make a stunning backdrop, but everyone knows it. There will likely be a lineup of people waiting for their turn to take photos, so factor that into your wedding timeline!

Iceland Wedding Adventure Tips: Expect the Unexpected

Iceland has a way of keeping you humble, and that’s just part of the magic. On the way to Vík, the road from Reykjavík shut down for four hours due to high winds. We all sat in our cars, hoping it would reopen, while I quietly celebrated having a backup plan ready: a longer loop to get around the closure if needed. Later, driving back to Reykjavík, an unexpected snowstorm turned the highway into a whiteout. Cars pulled over, visibility was near zero, and I was grateful I had built in plenty of extra time to catch my flight.

The takeaway? Flexibility and preparation are key. Here are some practical tips for couples planning an Iceland wedding or elopement:

  • Check road and weather conditions daily. Iceland’s weather changes quickly! High winds, snow, and sudden storms are all part of the adventure.

  • Rent a 4×4 vehicle to handle challenging roads, even in September (which is when this wedding took place).

  • Give yourself extra travel time between locations. A little buffer can save a lot of stress.

  • Pack layers and waterproof gear. Warmth and dryness are non-negotiable, especially on a wedding day.

  • Embrace the unpredictability. Some of the most memorable wedding moments happen when plans shift.

With the right mindset, a well-thought-out plan, and a sense of adventure, you can navigate Iceland’s wild landscapes safely while capturing the kind of photos that feel cinematic and timeless.
