Backyard Wedding in Ottawa

Allie and Jordan | An intimate backyard wedding in Ottawa

This backyard wedding in Ottawa is one that is near and dear to my heart. Allie and Jordan are two of the biggest sweethearts you’ll ever meet. After I photographed one of their friends weddings in 2018, they reached out to me to photograph their own. There is no greater compliment to receive!

They weren’t originally planning a backyard wedding. In fact, their original plans included having a low-key wedding at The Courtyard restaurant in Ottawa. But with Covid regulations restricting so many wedding plans in 2020, they too had to pivot.

Despite their change of plans, they had an incredible intimate wedding! Since they didn’t want to rely on a traditional wedding venue, they decided to host their wedding in their very own backyard! And better yet, they had just purchased their very first house, so they were able to create some amazing memories in it.

The day started off relaxed and chill, with Allie and her girls getting ready in the dining room. Once Jordan arrived, they had a super emotional first look in their backyard. I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the whole house! Afterwards, we ventured to Mer Bleue bog for wedding party photos and couples portraits. Since it was a hot sunny day in early September, it really felt like summer!

the ceremony

As soon as it was time for their ceremony, rain clouds rolled in. It started sprinkling, even though the weather forecast showed clear skies. So, we held off for a few minutes to see what would happen! The benefit of having such a small, intimate wedding is being able to change the timeline to fit your needs.

There was one critical moment that still gives me shivers to think about. The entire group (of about 30) was trying to make the call whether or not to just go for it, or wait even longer. Should the ceremony happen now? Or should we wait? At one point, Allie’s mom came running out the backdoor and shouted, “Let’s do it!! Let’s go for it!”. So we did. It’s hard to explain why, but I was so overcome with emotion. We all were. After everything they had been through, after changing plans a thousand times, “Let’s do it!!!” was the perfect way to summarize this wedding.

And do it, they did. Scroll down to see the images from this magical day. Words cannot express how grateful I am to have been part of it all. Thank you Allie and Jordan for trusting me through all of it!

  1. This is amazing! I’ve been struggling to find my venue with Covid being in the way every turn we take. Having seen this I’m sold on a small ceremony and why look further than my own backyard… amazing!

  2. You killed it! This is so perfect! I know COVID hasn’t made anything easy, but they look so happy and the group photos you took are just wonderful! Will have to remember some of these poses!
